The president of the Mining Chamber of Chile and CEO of Metaproject Group, Manuel Viera Flores, was a guest on the program Más Que Números on Radio Infinita, where he addressed the scope of the announcement made by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the application of a 50% tariff on copper.
During the conversation, Viera emphasized the strategic importance of copper for the national economy, pointing out that "copper is our main beam, our main export product, generating approximately 50 billion dollars for the country".
Likewise, the union leader warned that if this tariff measure is implemented, “there will be a significant reduction of foreign currency for Chile, which will directly affect the fiscal coffers and the country's competitiveness in the international market, considering that countries such as Peru will surpass us in production by 2040”.
Faced with this scenario, Viera was emphatic in recommending a diplomatic approach to address the conflict and proposed that Chile declare copper as a national security product, given its strategic relevance for economic development.
