Implementation of the C+ Management System in the Radomiro Tomic Division: A Success Story in Operational Excellence

At Metaproject, our mission is to contribute to the sustainable development of mining by offering innovative solutions and supporting our clients in achieving operational excellence. A standout example of this commitment is our work on implementing the C+ management system in Codelco’s Radomiro Tomic Division. This strategic project focuses on optimizing operational processes, driving continuous improvement, and fostering a cultural transformation rooted in values and leadership.

A System for Cultural and Operational Transformation

The C+ management system, developed by Codelco, goes beyond being a process improvement tool; it is a framework designed to promote organizational maturity in key operational areas. Its primary focus lies in optimizing processes and developing human talent, essential pillars for ensuring the sustainability and competitiveness of Chilean mining.

At Metaproject, we have taken on a strategic role in implementing the SEMAS system, collaborating closely with Radomiro Tomic’s operational areas to drive meaningful transformations. In a conversation with Jorge Llanos, Operational Excellence Engineer at Metaproject and a key member of Codelco’s Lean Management Service, we delved into the core principles of this approach.

“Our work goes beyond improving management indicators; it’s about building a solid foundation for leadership based on values such as respect and humility. These qualities are essential for achieving operational excellence and transforming organizational culture,” Llanos emphasized. His vision reflects Metaproject’s commitment to holistic development, where human talent and process optimization converge to deliver sustainable and competitive results.

Focus on the Wet Area

“The wet area, which includes critical processes such as solvent extraction, is one of the main focal points for our team. Jorge Llanos, as part of the plant team, supervises and supports the superintendencies in this area on their path to organizational maturity.” This includes:

  • Integrating the C+ system into operational processes.
  • Strengthening leadership through training and tools that align teams with operational excellence principles.
  • Providing technical and strategic support to ensure the division’s objectives are achieved on time and within scope.

Results and Progress

Since the service began in March 2023, significant progress has been made. The team currently consists of two key professionals:

  • Matías Pavez, who leads the support area, manages the database, and ensures data portability.
  • Jorge Llanos, responsible for the direct implementation of the system in the wet area, contributing from within the operation itself.

Key achievements include:

  1. Establishing a culture of continuous improvement in operational areas.
  2. Preparing for external evaluations of the excellence index, conducted by representatives from other Codelco divisions.
  3. Strengthening work teams, fostering cohesion and commitment to strategic objectives.

Upcoming Challenges

“Despite the progress, important challenges remain. These include the ongoing strengthening of leadership in operational areas and aligning all processes with Codelco’s excellence standards. A significant milestone ahead will be the evaluation of the excellence index, a process that will measure the impact of the C+ system and identify areas for improvement.”

Contributing to the Future of Mining

“This project reflects Metaproject’s commitment to Codelco’s mission and to the sustainable development of the country. At Radomiro Tomic, we reaffirm our leadership in implementing innovative solutions for mining.”

Metaproject positions itself as a strategic partner for the mining industry, contributing its expertise in:

  • Designing and managing investment projects.
  • Optimizing hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes.
  • Performance evaluation and leadership in processing plants.

With initiatives such as the implementation of the C+ management system, we continue to build a legacy of excellence, innovation, and commitment to people, processes, and the sustainable development of mining in Chile.
